Nathaniel Garro, knight errant and agent of the Sigillite, returns from the battlefields of Calth to find a new mission already waiting for him – a ragged fleet of Space Marines from several Legions lingers at the edge of the Terran system. With the presence of World Eaters and Emperor’s Children causing concern among the loyalist defenders and drawing a grim parallel with his own frantic flight, Garro must look beneath the obvious if he is to determine friend from foe...
This tale sits between Oath of Moment and Legion of One so I have listened to them out of order, which for me led to spoilers. There is a lot to enjoy with this tale, up first it is a longer tale (over two hours) giving Swallow more time to build out the story. The characters are a lot more varied in backgrounds and legions, with us seeing Deathguard, World Eaters, Ultramarines, Emperor Children and White Scars.
This is a very character-driven story. With Garro having freshly returned to Luna with Rubio, they are both soon called back into action. In the outskirts of the Solar System, a fleet of ships has appeared seeking refuge in the wake of the civil war. The only problem is the ships are made up of the traitorous legions, it is up to Garro and his friends to decide if they are loyal to traitors.
Overall a great story, full of action, intrigue and twists. The whole who you can trust narrative is greatly acted out by the writing of Swallow and I highly recommend purchasing it. If you are new to the series go back and listen to Oath of Moment first.
