Time for something a little different, a story about two chapters I rarely read about. I hope it will spark my interest in them to paint one or two.
Title: Heart of Decay
Author: Ben Counter
Blurb: Two Relictors Space Marine Chapter heroes interrogate a prisoner – a hideous servant of the Dark Gods, a Traitor Astartes of the Death Guard.
The Relictors Space Marine Chapter is renowned for gathering artifacts of Chaos and delving into the secrets of the Dark Gods. Captain Vidarna and Apothecary Achaon are tasked with the interrogation – and torture, if necessary – of a captured prisoner, a warrior of the Death Guard. After ten thousand years of war and corruption, what secrets might he yield? The pair attempt to find out, with hideous results.
Running time: 28 minutes.
Performed by: John Banks, Matthew Hunt and Toby Longworth.
Review
As mentioned, this story doesn't involve Space Marines generally written about, which instantly intrigued me. We join two Relictor Space Marines as they attempt to interrogate a Plague God warrior of the Death Guard. Their goal is to discover the secrets and future goals of the forsaken legion, but can they achieve this without becoming corrupted?
The twist of the tale is a bit obvious about halfway through, but like all Black Library tales, this is well performed, and the sound effects are very immersive. I rather enjoyed moving away from narration and, instead, having a heavier dialogue piece. It was a nice change of pacing.
Overall a nice piece that worked very well as an audio drama.
