Warlord Games Unboxing - SJS Judge Gerhart - 2000 AD - Judge Dredd

Let me welcome you to another Warlord Games Unboxing. This is the SJS Judge Gerhart kit from the  Rebellion x 2000 AD x Warlord Games wargaming game for Judge Dredd.

Here are the details of this fantastic kit.

Now more than 75% Cyborg, Alex Gerhart was an up‐and‐coming star in the sinister ranks of the Special Judicial Squad. Unfortunately, like so many of his colleagues, he had an unhealthy obsession with Judge Dredd. Not only had the venerable Judge been instrumental in exposing the worst excesses of the SJS under Judge Cal, he also represented the one thing that the SJS could simply not process: an incorruptible Judge.

For several years, Gerhart pursued a vendetta against Dredd to uncover some transgression, no matter how small. While investigating the death of a Tek Judge, he unsuccessfully tried to force Dredd to admit having a guilty conscience about the 350 million citizens who fell to the Chaos Virus, a bio‐weapon unleashed by Sov agents in revenge for Dredd destroying East‐Meg One.

Ultimately Gerhart’s obsession with Dredd would cost him dearly. He saved Dredd’s life by taking the impact of a missile meant for his nemesis. He simply could not let Dredd die before guilt was fully proven. Gerhart’s self‐sacrifice saw fully half of his shattered body being replaced by cybernetic parts.

Review

For those who have yet to get used to 40K, Grey Knights are the elite of the elite. Space Marines who work for the Imperial Inquisition and whose sole purpose is destroying the daemon! The seers of the Imperium have been receiving dire warnings. A powerful daemon banished thousands of years ago is about to be summoned within the Trail of St. Evisser. It falls upon the Grey Knights to seek out and stop this from happening, but with few resources available, this will prove difficult.

The opening to this book is action-packed, full of gore, and, honestly, excellent. I had forgotten how intense 40k can be. Then from this, we enter an almost detective-style story, following a small team of Grey Knights attempting the impossible. To root out a cult hidden among millions of citizens over multiple planets. That has been planning a way for Thousands of years! This is a complex task and Counter conveys this perfectly.

There are surprising twists, and even though you may guess the correct answer, you will still be surprised by how they ultimately achieve their goal. The book is about 50 pages longer than it needs to be, as the author delves deep into the description, but as a fan of lore, this pleased me.

Give it a try. I am sure it will surprise you.

Audio Book 143 // Star Wars: The Queen's Peril by E.K. Johnston

It's strange how your enjoyment can flip-flop all over. Last year was a big Horus Heresy/ Sci-fi Year for me, which then switched to Conan's sword and Sorcery and is now in a Star Wars Space Opera phase. This popped up in my recommendation, and I decided to try it. In classic Me style, I didn't check if it was part of a series. I would later discover it is. But I got lucky that this is a self-contained piece.

Title: Star Wars: The Padmé Trilogy #2 - Queen's Peril
Author: E.K. Johnston
Blurb: When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace. To keep her safe and secure, she’ll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys. Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group. When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test—of themselves, and of each other.

Review

This listen surprised me; I learnt things I hadn't realized during The Phantom Menace movie or via the Clone Wars Cartoon. Like Padme was only 14/15 in the movie. How can a kid that young fight in a battle for her world? It gave me more respect for the character, which is also a great eye-opener.

As mentioned, this audiobook added depth to a film and characters that I maybe didn't give a chance to when I first saw the film. It gave them more depth and actually engaged me more than it ever had. We learn the names of the handmaidens, and we also learn the roles they play and how they are each unique and talented, brave, strong and flawed.

This is my first E.K. Johnston title, and I was surprised by how character-driven the plot is, with it swapping between the Queen and Maidens and a Young Obi-wan. Though as you listen to it, you can't help but feel you are watching a crash unfold before you as we all know what will become of this era. But it is a warming tale of adventure. I need to get the rest of the series now.

For a Young Adult piece, it is perfect, it introduces the characters well and builds off their movie counterparts, with wonderful narration and sound effects throughout. It is full of hope, fate, and a belief that goodness and love will always win. It is classic Star Wars, and for a surface fan of the lore, it was a pleasure to listen to.

Highly recommend it.

Warlord Games Unboxing - Cadet Judge - 2000 AD - Judge Dredd

Welcome to a long overdue Warlord Games Unboxing. This Cadet Judge is from the Rebellion Publishing: 2000 AD comics & Warlord Games collaboration game for Judge Dredd.

Here are the details of this fantastic kit.

When possible, buy directly from Warlord Games or your local game store - https://us.warlordgames.com/collections/judge-dredd/products/judge-dredd-cadet-judge (Tell them I sent you and that they should sponsor me ha)

Cadet Judge

Potential Judge candidates are usually inducted into the Academy of Law at the tender age of five. Here, they are subject to rigorous academic training in all aspects of the law that governs the North American Mega-Cities. By the end of the process, they have acquired knowledge exceeding those of the most senior lawyers and justice officials of the early 21st century.

In parallel to their academic training, they undergo an intensive physical and mental exercise programme that hones their firearms and close combat skills whilst also preparing them to endure the various injuries and physical hardships that life patrolling the streets will throw at them.

Whilst the life of a cadet is mainly taken up by study and training, if a dire situation or crisis demands the Justice Department deploy more manpower, cadets may be armed and sent out onto the streets, usually as part of a carefully monitored team engaging in fairly low-intensity operations. One highlight of a cadet’s continual assessment is the ‘Hotdog Run’ where a group of cadets accompanied by Senior Judges are sent on patrol in the radioactive hell of the Cursed Earth beyond the Mega-City’s walls.

However, during the Necropolis and Chaos Day incidents, cadets were deployed into hazardous situations typically only handled by a fully qualified Judge. Many cadets performed bravely and well, as befitted their training. Still, the losses incurred had severe future implications for the Justice Department when it struggled to maintain enough qualified Street Judges.

Book Review 247 // Red Nails by Robert E. Howard

And like that, we reach the end of the Robert E. Howard Conan Adventures. Now I know there are plenty of others out there from other authors. But I don't want to travel that road yet. I've enjoyed reading the complete series in order, and it has given me a great view of this writer growing with each story. So for one last time, let us travel the open road with Conan.

Title: Red Nails
Author: Robert E. Howard
Blurb:
Pursing the beautiful Valeria in the Black countries, Conan happens upon a strange, walled city in the midst of a desert. Conan and Valeria become enmeshed in a civil war, a war driven by ancient hate and blood-lust that threatens the few surviving inhabitants of Xuchotl.

Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) is best known today for creating the sword-and-sorcery hero Conan, subject of two movies and dozens of books. However, during his short life Howard also published stories in a number of other genres. In addition to fantasy, Howard wrote boxing stories, westerns, detective stories, horror and created an number of compelling characters such as Solomon Kane, Bran Mak Morn, El Borak, Steve Costigan, Pike Bearfield, King Kull, and Conan the Cimmerian. Howard committed suicide in 1936.

Review

Glad we finished on a strong one rather than a weak fizzle. As I mentioned, this was the last Conan, and this was due to Weird Tales not paying their bills. During the Great Depression, Weird Tales had failed to pay Howard the $1500 owed for his work, so Howard took his pen elsewhere and wrote Westerns instead.

The story starts with Valeria, who, having just killed a would-be rapist, is now on the run. This classic strong, decisive, beautiful female lead soon catches Conan's attention, who gives chase. Upon reaching her, they talk as if they have a past, one I don't remember if it was ever written in another story. We then get a classic Howard sexual tension paragraph before a creature appears to feast on their horses. Soon the pair are working together to survive the story.

I'm glad this story happened. The last few kind of felt like a blend/retelling of the same story. Conan does what Conan does best, and we end up with a great little adventure piece set within an ancient city. Worth the read.

But where to next? Some Star Wars titles, with Judge Dredd and Aliens, have sat on the shelf for far too long. So some Sci-fi is in our future. Thanks for reading!

Book Review 246 // The Hour of the Dragon by Robert E. Howard.

We are nearing the end of our adventures with Conan, and I can't help but feel a little sad. It has been a joy to read these in order and watch as Howard progresses the character and builds upon previous ideas. This is a unique title as it was originally written as a series and then squashed together to make the book. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Title: The Hour of the Dragon

Author: Robert E. Howard

Blurb: Written in the 1930s as a serial for Weird Tales, the famous pulp magazine, Hour of the Dragon is the only novel by Howard featuring his greatest creation, Conan the Barbarian. This powerful novel of violent adventure has spawned many imitations in the genre over the years, including a series of best-selling paperbacks which, in imitation of Howard, continued the adventures of Conan.

Conan is at the pinnacle of his career in this story, having roamed the imaginary prehistoric world of Hyborea and, with native cunning and sheer force, fought his way to the throne of Aquilonia. He is the archetype of the invincible warrior: tough, fearless and incredibly strong.

As the novel opens, King Conan is captured by the magic of the evil sorcerer Xaltotun, whom Conan's enemies have raised from the dead, after three thousand years, for the express purpose of removing Conan from the throne. Conan's armies are so unprepared to battle Xaltotun's sorcery that they are routed on the battlefield and Aquilonia is conquered.

Conan is secretly released from prison by a slave girl who loves him, and he fights his way out of the dungeon catacombs to freedom, defeating a giant murderous ape who blocks his way. In the course of his escape, he overhears a secret meeting and learns that the source of Xaltotun's power is a mysterious jewel, the Heart of Ahriman, which Xaltotun's allies have stolen from him to insure their control over him.

Conan resolves to track the jewel across the barbaric landscape of Hyboria, destroy Xaltotun and regain his kingdom.

Review

Strange to read a multiplot story in one go as a book. If you read it as a series over months, the story would flow better. But in this set-up, it felt like a lot of jumping forwards was happening and a loss of time. But as a story, I personally really enjoyed it. It feels like Howard is finding his stride and embracing previous ideas in this tale. People may dislike its similarities to other tales, but I can see how Howard tries to improve upon previous attempts.

With a longer flowing story, we can enjoy events you wouldn't usually get in a short tale. We get full-scale battles, well-rounded villains, and encounters. We also still have plenty of space for creature features and treacherous allies. I enjoyed the quest, as Conan has to move through many personas to seek a magical jewel that will end the reign of the evil wizard. It allowed our kingly Conan to revisit his Barbarian days and his old life as a pirate and polish up on his thieving skills. Pirate Conan is my favourite version of the hero.

Though it is a highlight, it acts as a double-sided blade, and due to so much travelling, we lose the joy of the location. In his short stories, Howard has done a fantastic job of describing a place. But with this constant changing of the site gives us no chance to enjoy this aspect of his writing. But overall a great read that I would happily enjoy again.

Book Review 245 // Shadows in Zamboula by Robert E. Howard

I knew it was coming, but still, it took me a little off guard. I feel this title is by far is the most obvious of Howard's work to showcase racism. Please be aware when reading it that we are entering the end times of Howard, and his views on the world are becoming darker and depressing. Read with caution and do idolize it.

Title: Shadows In Zamboula
Author: Robert E. Howard
Blurb: Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. He is well known for having created the character Conan the Cimmerian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond. Voracious reading, along with a natural talent for prose writing and the encouragement of teachers, conspired to create in Howard an interest in becoming a professional writer. One by one he discovered the authors that would influence his later Jack London and Rudyard Kipling. It's clear from Howard's earliest writings and the recollections of his friends that he suffered from severe depression from an early age. Friends recall him defending the act of suicide as a valid alternative as early as eighteen years old, while many of his stories and poems have a suicidal gloom and intensity that seem prescient in hindsight, describing such an end not as a tragedy but as a release from hell on earth.

Format: 48 pages e-book

Review

In a landscape of many races, Conan still manages to stand out. Whilst tavern hoping through the city, Conan hears rumours of travellers disappearing and decides to investigate. Here he discovers a cult that enjoys the taste of human flesh.

At this point, the story takes a turn with racist elements coming forth and souring the story. Conan is definitely a product of his writer's worldview and, unfortunately very much a symptom of the age. I have seen people defend it, but I can't understand how as a reader today you can separate the writer from the story.

It pretty much threw the story for me. This is a shame as it starts off intriguing, and even has a scary villain in Baal-pteor. But ultimately I am left feeling urked by it. I recommend missing it and read something else.

Book Review 244 // Beyond the Black River by Robert E. Howard

I think I have to say this aloud. This is possibly my favourite Conan to date. There it is out there for the world to see, judge me as you see fit!

Title: Beyond the Black River

Author: Robert E. Howard

Blurb: Conan the Barbarian is employed by one of the civilized countries to help in its push to claim lands from the primitive Picts. The Picts are not excited about the idea, however. Old gods and mythical creatures are called up by the Pict witches to contest the invading army, and Conan finds himself battling for his life amid the blood-thirsty hordes that include sabre-toothed tigers, 40-foot-long venomous snakes and a demon from another dimension who is intent on crushing him. The huge dog Slasher appears here and distinguishes himself so well in a doomed battle to delay their forces that Conan openly praises his courage and pledges that 7 Pict heads will roll in his honour.

Review

By now you know I have read a lot of Conan back-to-back. And I stand by my announcement that this is my favourite so far (still time for a surprise winner). I found Beyond the Black River to be fast-paced and truly intriguing. The story is captivating and it held me the entire time. Spoilers are coming like all my reviews so be warned.

Conan as mentioned in the blurb is hired by the Aquilonian army as a soldier and a scout in their war against the Picts. Unfortunately for Conan, he is part of an undermanned garrison that is about to be besieged by the forces of Zogar Sag. A Pict Wizard, who through the strength of arms and magic has amassed an army of huge proportions. To make it even more challenging Zogar has also used his magic to control wild beasts and we see the animal kingdom rising up against the Aquilonians as well. As the adventure unfolds, Conan is tasked with killing the wizard, saving his friends and ultimately hating the Aquilonian nobility just a little bit more.

In a surprise twist, there was no damsel in distress and I feel this helped the title. Yes, it is a simple straightforward Sword and Sorcery. But it is excellently crafted and reads like Howard has found his voice and style. I can't help but notice the similarities between this and Westerns, which I assume Howard was inspired by, but I feel it may even go deeper than that. This story has a true "colonizer" feel to it that sadly hits home no matter how you read it.

Let me know your thoughts and thanks for reading.
