Youtube // Strontium Dog - The Good, The Bad and The Mutie

It's happened. I have completed the starter set from Warlord Games. The Good, The Bad and The Mutie is set within the 2000 AD comic series called Strontium Dog and follows one of the saddest tales in the series. The game comes with 8 characters. Three are Strontium Dog agents - Johnny Alpha, The Gronk and Wulf Sternhammer and they face off against five villains of the Max Bubba Gang - Max Bubba, Brute Mosely, Lowdown O'Phee, Skull and Impetigo Jones.

Hope you enjoyed and as always, like, subscribe and follow if enjoyed this. You can also support the blog by using any of the following links:

Miniature Monday // Lowdown O'Phee

It finally happened. I've finished the whole set! That's right I've completed The Good, The Bad and The Mutie, by Warlord Games. Meaning I can now start moving onto some basic terrain so I can start playing some games. But before any of that happen let's deep dive into the character Lowdown O'Phee.

Real name: Lowdown O'Phee

Affiliation: Max Bubba

Unusual features: No body

Occupation: Gang member

Origin: Mutated by strontium-90

Place of death: Lapland

History

Lowdown McPhee was a mutant born without a body who was a member of Max Bubba's gang. He took part in Bubba's plot to destroy humanity by going back in time to Viking Scandinavia and randomly killing people. Lowdown died after being shot several times in a final confrontation between Bubba and a group led by Johnny Alpha.

Transportation: Electric car; time machine.

Weapons: Blaster.

This was a hard model to paint. It's strange not having the body aspect of a model and the casting on the face was a little misshapen. But I am happy to have him finished and with the set complete The Good, The Bad and The Mutie is now finished. With this opening set complete, I am now ready to continue building up some terrain and attempt some solo games. Wish me luck with this.

As always, I thank you for stopping by, I hope you will leave a comment or give me a follow. If you are interested in starting your own Strontium Dog Adventures I will leave some Amazon links below. Cheers!

Miniature Monday // Strontium Dog: Wulf Sternhammer

Hello, Old Cucumbers! Welcome to another installment of Warlord Games Strontium Dog miniatures. Slowly but surely I am working my way through the full introduction set; The Good, The Bad and The Mutie.

So far I have completed Johnny Alpha, The Gronk, Max Bubba, Brute Mosely, Skull and Impetigo Jones. With Wulf Sternhammer completed I can move onto Lowdown O'Phee and start playing some intro games (excited). After this set is complete I wish to move onto the Mutant General Pack, closely followed by Durham Red. But let's get into Wulf's back story.

Real name: Wulf Sternhammer

Relatives: Olga Sternhammer (mother); Kenton Sternhammer (son)

Place of birth: Scandinavia

Place of death: Smiley's World

History

Wulf Sternhammer is a character in the Starlord and 2000 AD comic strip Strontium Dog. A great flaxen-haired bear of a man, he was a Viking whose life was saved by the mutant bounty hunter Johnny Alpha, who had travelled back in time to Wulf's era (793 AD) in search of the sadistic criminal Max Bubba and his gang. Wulf was accidentally transported back to 2175 AD (or thereabouts; accounts vary) by the time bomb Johnny used to capture Max. Because Johnny had saved his life so many times Wulf swore lifelong loyalty to him and became his friend and partner.

The two worked together for fifteen years, with Wulf's good-humoured nature and tremendous strength proving invaluable to the formerly lonely Alpha in his harsh existence. Wulf could work hard when necessary but also knew how to enjoy life, so he was constantly ready with a smile and a joke when things got tough. With the creds they got for capturing Xen the Brainwraith on the planet Burrito, the pair retired to Smiley's World and built a cabin on Moondog Mountain. They then rescued Eleanor Keeble's husband and three children from interstellar slavers for no fee after Johnny took pity on her.

Wulf was eventually murdered by Bubba and his gang when they returned to exact revenge on him and on Johnny; Bubba had the pair staked out under a blazing sun, but Wulf broke free only to die in a hail of bullets.

Powers and abilities

Abilities: Proficient fighter and bounty hunter; can repair robots.

Strength level: Wulf has "the strength of ten" (according to Starlord #9). Ten of what is not specified.

Weaknesses: Ale.

Equipment: Anti-grav chute.

Transportation: His longboat Dragonbreath; Morks; spaceships; skipdip (amphibious vehicle used to navigate swamps).

Weapons: Wulf carried an enormous war hammer which he referred to as his 'Happy Stick', and was also proficient with various weapons from Johnny Alpha's era, such as a Vebley custom hand blaster (with infrared night sight) and thermo bombs.

Notes: Curiously, Wulf, who spoke a kind of mangled English, had a habit of referring to people as "old cucumber."

I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know your thoughts in the comments and as always thank you for stopping by.

Miniature Monday // Strontium Dog: Skull

Member number 4 of the Max Bubba gang is now complete. Simply known as Skull this is the weirdest of the characters in my opinion. Here are some official details:

History

Skull was a member of Max Bubba's gang. He took part in his plan to wipe out humanity, travelling back in time with Bubba to Iceland. He was killed in a fire-fight with Johnny Alpha towards the end — he was shot in the chest several times and stumbled back into a volcanic crater behind him.

Sex: Male
Eyes: White
Unusual Feature: Horned Skull as head
Occupation: Criminal
Known for: Killing people.
Location of Death: Iceland
Weaknesses: Blasters, volcanoes
Paraphernalia/Weapons: Blaster, Time-travelling machine.

Notes:
From the photographs in the Warlord Games rulebook, Skull is painted in Green and Yellow. A very similar colour palate to Johnny Alpha. Now personally I am not a fan of the colour choice, especially as I want Alpha to stand out on the tabletop. I decided to go a different route, with Skull being a part of Max Bubba's gang, I thought a similar yellow to his coat would work. So with yellow being the dominant colour, I choose red to act as the secondary. This is a colour scheme I really enjoy pairing so expect to see it a lot. With Skull now completed I am left with two models left to paint Wulf Sternhammer and O'Phee. Hopefully, I can have these painted soon and start to do some battle reports!

Comic Review 123 // Strontium Dog: Search/Destroy Agency Files 03

Another gigantic omnibus for Strontium Dog: Search/Destroy Agency Files 04. Compiling 10 stories over 384 pages. The big tale in this the Max Bubba story which leads perfectly into the starter box set, I can't wait to read that one.

Here is the official write up:

Following the Atom Wars in the 22nd century, many of the survivors were mutated by the Strontium 90 fallout. Unable to get regular jobs, forced into ghettoes and considered an underclass by the 'norms', the only work open to them was bounty hunting. These Search/Destroy Agents hunt the criminals too dangerous for the Galactic Crime Commission.

No clues there about the stories ha. Let us dive in. By now we know the score, Johnny Alpha is a powerful and violent man but has a heart of gold and is a sucker for a sob story. Most of the book has very solid classic storylines, with Johnny Hunting down his man. But there are two standout tales that combine together to produce a heartbreaking tale.

The first is Max Bubba. Bubba and his gang members have once again escaped prison and are seeking revenge on Alpha and Wulf. Ambushing the pair they torture Alpha and Wulf staking them out in the burning sun. Johnny starts having flashbacks and we meet our main villain alongside his gang as they break out of prison the first time. Knowing they would be easily caught Bubba transports his gang through time to the era of the Vikings. Here Bubba plans to destroy the future by killing the past. As the future timeline starts to unravel Johnny Alpha is chosen to travel back in time to arrest/kill Bubba and his gang. During this adventure Alpha teams with the Viking warrior Wulf Sternhammer and with a crew of Vikings, they attempt to hunt down the Bubba gang.

A seriously epic tale of adventure, we have multiple timeline themes merging as the damage to the future continues. In the showdown between Bubba and Alpha the body count rises, and but Johnny manages to capture 3 of the criminals (Bubba, Mosley and Jones) and kills the rest. During the fighting Wulf is transported to the future and after reuniting with Alpha, chooses to stay forming the duo we know and love. This story ends tragically as Wulf Sternhammer attempts to escape and is gunned down and dies in the baking sun.

After this heartbreaking story, we join Johnny as he nursed back to health, basically a couple standard filler stories before Rage; the follow-up tale to Max Bubba. This is a dark tale, Johnny is a broken man on a dark path of revenge and we watch as he travels the galaxy to hunt down the Bubba gang. Through his chasing of the gang Johnny manages to kill off Brute Mosley in an avalanche, then after seriously wounding Impetigo Jones we see him get eaten alive by alien crabs on a beach. Then the final showdown happens, one on one Alpha grievously wounds Bubba and seemingly leaves him for dead. In the next scene, Bubba is in hospital and believes Alpha wrongly left him for dead. Filled with hope and the belief he can escape Bubba leaves the hospital to discover it was all a vile trick by Alpha to give Bubba false hope. As Bubba pleads for his life all Alpha can say is "I hate you!" and guns Bubba down in the street finally ending this saga.

The rest of the book starts to show the return of the Johnny Alpha we know and love as he helps Mutant Farmers hold of some norms and then we get some bonus stories, with a returned Wulf, I believe showing a job set before the Bubba story. The main issue I have is: Where has the Gronk gone?

Overall an above average read. Made epic and heartbreaking by the Bubba/Rage story. I'm intrigued about what will happen in 04, I am hoping we will finally get more McNulty and Durham Red. Come back next week for that issue.

Miniature Monday // Warlord Games - Strontium Dogs - Build A Mutie

New Youtube video today! Tried my hand at unboxing a Warlord Games - Strontium Dogs - Build A Mutie boxset. A fun box full of enough parts to build five mutants with an assortment of weapons. I got through the initial opening and building, and then plan on doing a second video for painting once I have the chance.

The five mutant combinations I went with:

  1. Tentacle armed, nose on the forehead with an axe.
  2. Vampire/bat head, chainsaw.
  3. Two-headed, big nose, horn, tall, pistol and mantis arm.
  4. Lumpy head and blaster.
  5. Bullhead, pistol and club.
I just need names for them all, got a suggestion. Drop them in the comments.

Have you played the game or built any of the figures? Let me know in the comments. I do appreciate all feedback and comments and if you wish to support the blog hit subscribe or use one of the following links:

Miniature Monday // Strontium Dogs - Brute Mosely

It's finally happening I am painting some of my Strontium Dog figures. The first was the Gronk and now I move onto Brute Mosely the bright blue mutant.

Character

The big blue mutant was a member of the criminal gang led by Max Bubba and assisted him in his attempt to destroy human history by going back in time to the Viking era and killing people. His murderous ways eventually caught up with him, but not before he had been complicit in the murder of time-displaced Wulf Sternhammer, earning him the undying enmity of Wulf's friend, Strontium Dog Johnny Alpha, with predictably fatal consequences. He was crushed in a rockfall and abandoned by Bubba and Impetigo Jones as they tried to flee Alpha. Alpha later found Mosely crushed underneath the fallen rock and begging for help. Alpha ignored Mosely's pleas and left him to die. It's later revealed that he bled to death.

Powers and abilities

Abilities: Killing people.
Strength level: Superhuman.
Weaknesses: Rocks.
Paraphernalia: Time machine; skimmer.
Weapons: Guns.
Notes: Brute Mosely may or may not be a descendant of the notorious British fascist and Nazi sympathizer Oswald Mosely. Never explained in the comics but they had a habit of basing characters on real-life people.

This was a weird model to paint especially as I originally tried to go blue and black, but it was way too dark so I brighten the model using red on the trousers. At some point, I want to do another highlight on the blue to pick up some final details and I also want to pick out the leg linings in a pale cream colour, before finally completing the base in grey to match my upcoming city boards.

Unboxing 02 // Warlord Games Strontium Dogs: The Good the Bad and the Mutie.

This one I have been excited for a long while. Strontium Dogs by Warlord Games - This game is set in an Universe designed by 2000 AD. For those not in the know Strontium Dogs is a skirmish tabletop battle game for two or more players set in the Strontium Dog universe defined by legendary comic creators John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. In it, Mutant Search/Destroy agents – the Strontium Dogs – are bounty hunters in a dangerous universe full of outlaws, pirates and corruption.
Players take control of a small team of bounty hunters or the outlaws, criminals and renegades they hunt in gun battles, chases and showdowns across the galaxy.

The box was pretty nondescript and thin brown card box. Inside was the game and a special edition version of Johnny Alpha. Of course I had to get the game opened and have a look inside.

The box itself is pretty thin and weak and to be honest will just become a display for me. The goodies inside will ultimately find new homes in carry cases. But what is actually inside?
  • 112 page full-colour A4 softback rulebook
  • 12 page scenario booklet
  • 8 x metal miniatures
  • 2 x plastic tokens sprue
  • 36 x game cards
  • 6 x character cards
  • Laser-cut MDF Solar Farm
  • 2 x six-sided dice
  • 8 x 2000AD combat dice
So where to begin? Up first the rulebook it is a beautiful book, nicely coloured and written. Features some new gameplay styles I am not use to and will ultimately showcase in a future post. The main rules seemingly fill maybe ten pages, whilst the rest is gang designing, scenarios, playing a campaign and a lot of fluff pieces. We will ultimately come back to the book in a later post.

We then have a 12 page scenario booklet, to let you replay the story of Johnny Alpha versus Max Bubba. This story arc in the comic series was a big one and I want give away spoilers but it did upset a lot of readers when it happened and it broke my heart when I read it. But it basically starts of small and builds in complexities as you go along. These missions will be also showcased on here as I play my way through them so remember to check back.
The miniatures. Now this is the important part, 8 beautiful miniatures are included in the game whilst a ninth comes free with the game. The first character of note is Johnny Alpha the main man himself. Now when you purchase the game you get the one in the set and the bonus special edition one. The game edition is a classic looking Johnny armed with two pistols and wearing his classic get up. This model will be a joy to paint, only negatives I have about this model are 1- the guns are rather thin and prone to bending 2- the bases are rather thick, am I meant to cut them off? They seem rather thick for that.

Then the special edition. This Johnny Alpha is ready to get down and dirty. Helmet is gone and his electro knuckles are drawn and ready to beat the bounty into submission. Once again it is a beautiful model with amazingly crisp details. The only negative I have to say is that this model doesn't have a different rule set compared to the above one. I would have liked to have seen a different set of rules for him. Maybe make him more aggressive and combat focused. But nice to have an option over what mini to use.

Then we have Johnny's side kicks. Up first the Gronk a tiny non violent alien who for game purposes sucks at fighting but makes for a great medic. From what I've seen you have to guard the Gronk in return for characters that will always stay in the fight. Then we have Wulf Sternhammer, a rare case in the Strontium Dog story. Wulf is not a mutant, but instead a time travelling viking stuck in the future. After a quick glimpse of the rules Wulf is seemingly a beast in combat and I think painting him up will be quite fun.

The Max Bubba crime gang! Five members in total meaning that to equal Johnny and Wulf they needed an extra three models. Up first is Bubba (bottom left), armed with a face like butter and a cannon that an eighties movie hero would be jealous of. Bubba is no Johnny but is an equal to Wulf, he will be fun to play, as I imagine he would sacrifice his gang to get away. Then we have Skull (bottom right) pretty straight up pistol welding merc and that he seems to be there to up the numbers. Low Down (top right) is a weird ass looking model with a shorter than normal torso, making him harder to hit, definitely going to be a strange painting experience. Then the last two models one of which is by far my favourite - Impetigo Jones (hat) he just looks like a classical wild west character with his wide brim hat and trench coat, stat wise a bit on the weaker side but I feel like he will pop some long range damage on the heroes when given the chance. Then finally Brute Mosley my favourite model in the box after Alpha. He is a god damn warthog with a blaster! To make him even more epic he is blue. Which will be an absolute blast to paint.

After the models we are left with an array of dice, cards and tokens. All which you will see when I start showcasing games on the blog. The final piece of the box is the terrain, this is a really big bonus to set and makes the box worth it's weight. The kit is ultimately made of laser cut mdf and is glued together using standard pva glue. First thing of note is the smell, damn the smell is strong. A real hit of burnt wood as the plastic is took off. For the most part the kit is super easy and apart from one piece it all went together beautiful. The hard piece to build is the generator rig, the annoying wind turbine on top had some of the thinnest pieces I have ever seen and sadly they broke in the process of pushing out the pieces, so you be careful!

As you can see it built a small house/building, a generator, a watchtower and four solar panels. These are a great starter set and I fully plan on converting these up some more before painting. I want these to blend seemingly between the realms of Judge Dredd and Strontium Dogs. I want these to look a bit more scifi and far less modern day.

With these final pieces the unboxing is complete. Please do keep tabs on the blog as I wish to do some character profiles, painting posts and actual gaming posts. Let me know if you play below in the comments as I would love to find more players.
